Safer Subways Project
The Safer Subways project evolved through a process of regular improvement stimulated by responses from within the community and comprises of work that was carried out in the past. Current work involves the maintenance of lights and general cleaning.
Theme of work
- To give the subways back to those who live in and visit Bracknell, by transforming them into environments that are safer and perceived to be safer
- To encourage increased pedestrian use of the underpasses, reducing potential conflicts between pedestrians and cars, and assisting surveillance through increased usage
- To discourage repeat graffiti and to reduce the cost of its removal
- To use decoration and murals to transform the environment of the subways
Main aims and objectives
- To identify those subways that are targets for graffiti and vandalism
- To transform them by cleaning the surfaces
- To remove the 'blank canvas' afforded by a plain wall
- To treat the surfaces with a coating that enables subsequent graffiti to be removed more easily
- To create a less threatening and more aesthetically pleasing environment
- To ensure that lighting repair, litter removal, cleansing and graffiti removal is undertaken as a result of systematic work programmes, regular monitoring and encouraging increased reporting by members of the public

- Members of the public using the town centre as pedestrians and cyclists
- The town centre traders, businesses and developers
- The agencies involved in running the town centre and those involved in Safer Communities issues
