Direct Payments - Background Information

In May 2005, the Government published its plans for the future of adult social care in the Green Paper Independence, Well-being and Choice. One key way that the Government wishes to improve well-being for adults with social care needs and increase independence and choice is by means of direct payments.

Direct payments can also be paid to parents of disabled children and to disabled young people, aged 16-17. In the Green Paper Every Child Matters, the Government stated that it wanted to increase take up of direct payments to parents of disabled children to give them more choice and flexibility over the services they receive.
