Child Protection
The law allows the local authority, in certain circumstances, to take action to protect a child from abuse or neglect. This may involve calling a child protection conference to consider whether a child needs a Child Protection Plan. In exceptional circumstances the need to protect a child may include removing a child from their home for a short period of time or until the problems at home have been sorted out. Such a step can only be taken by Social Services with the prior consent of a Court or with the agreement of the parents.
Family and Adolescent Support Team
This team provide intensive support to prevent teenagers entering the care system or to help to maintain rehabilitation back into the family home. Referral to this team is through the Duty and Assessment Team.
Fostering
Fostering is a way of providing a family life for children and young people who cannot live with their parents. It is intended to be temporary so we can return fostered children to their own families wherever possible.
Looked After Children
We use the term ‘looked after’ when we arrange for children to live away from their families, either as part of a voluntary arrangement under the 1989 Children Act, or as the result of a care order under the 1989 Children Act.
Parenting Orders
A Parenting Order is an order under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. The Parenting Order was designed primarily to help and support parents when their children get into trouble. If you are given a Parenting Order, you may be required to attend counselling or guidance sessions where you will receive help on how to deal with the young person, e.g, parenting skills, managing the young person's behaviour, how to respond more effectively to challenging adolescent demands, ensuring your child is home during set hours, and ensuring they attend school regularly.
