Who is Likely to be Affected?

There is no accurate information about the number of children and young people in private foster care, but estimates by the Fostering Network suggest it is in the region of 8,000 to 10,000.

Private fostering situations are likely to involve:

  • Any children sent to this country by birth parents living overseas for education or health care reasons

  • Children living with a friend's family because of separation, divorce or arguments at home

  • Teenagers living with the family of a boyfriend or girlfriend

  • People who work away from home or unsociable hours which makes ordinary day care difficult
