Registering a Civil Partnership

What does it mean?

The legal status of some same sex couples in permanent relationships changed at the end of 2005, with the introduction of the Civil Partnership Registration Scheme.

  • Every local authority is required to provide a facility for the giving of notice of intention to register a civil partnership, and for the formation of a civil partnerships, from December 5th 2005.
  • Each of the couple will need to have a seven day residential qualification and to give notice in the area where they live prior to the formation of the civil partnership. It may be necessary to attend a designated office if immigration rules apply. In these cases, please phone for information.
  • The couple must be of the same sex, over 18 (or provide evidence of consent if over 16), not related to each other and not in an existing marriage or civil partnership.
  • There will be a 15 day waiting period once notice of intention to register has been given, before the formation can take place. All documents required MUST be produced at the time of giving notice. The documents required will include birth certificate (essential if under 23), current passport (if available), proof of address, divorce papers (if applicable), death certificate for former spouse (if applicable), chang eof name papers (if applicable), parental consent (if under 18). Please be aware that failure to produce the required documents will result in the notice not being taken.
  • It will be possible to form a civil partnership in a Register Office, or at an approved venue. Please phone for details of approved venues in Bracknell Forest. Syrett Suite, Easthampstead ParkIn Bracknell, it will be possible to form a civil partnership either at Easthampstead House or at our ceremonial venue, the Syrett Suite, at Easthampstead Park Conference Centre.
  • A civil partnership is formed once the couple have signed the schedule in the presence of a registration officer and two witnesses.
  • There will be no requirement for a ceremony as part of the legal process. However, in Bracknell we will be delighted to offer a ceremony to help make the day really special.
  • There will be procedures in place to reduce the 15 day waiting period for someone who is seriously ill and not expected to recover.
  • The statutory fees for giving notice of intention to register is £30 each, with a single fee of £40 for the formation of the civil partnership in the Blue Room or in Easthampstead House. Please phone for ceremony details.
