Bats and Snakes
If you find a bat in your house or on the ground during daylight hours it is likely to be in trouble and can be handled only with gloves and put in a box until a bat worker is able to help. For help with bats, call the Bat Conservation Trust helpline on 0845 1300 228.
Bats are protected under European law against disturbance or handling.
For more detailed information, visit the Bat Conservation Trust website.
We live in an area that includes large tracts of forest and heathland and it is therefore quite common for snakes to be found in our gardens. British reptiles do not generally pose a threat to people. If you see a snake, it is most likely to be a grass snake (natrix natrix) but in a few cases it may an adder (vipera berus). Both are generally shy and will move away if disturbed; there is no need for alarm.
All British reptiles are protected against injury and killing under the Wildllife and Countryside Act 1981.
