Ambarrow Archaeology Project
Children from four local Sandhurst schools took part in a week’s archaeological investigation at Ambarrow Court in July 2007. This project allowed the pupils and local people to learn the array of skills needed by archaeologists, whilst helping to uncover the history of Ambarrow Court. Built in 1885, the house was home to Colonel Harvey and his wife, and in the 1940s was used by the Ministry of Air Defence as a secret research centre before being demolished and turned into a nature reserve in the 1980s.
The children helped to research the house’s history, engage in cross-generational learning by interviewing ex-employees and helped to build a public exhibition. A public open day was well attended, with a special guest attendance from Channel Four’s 'Time Team' personality Phil Harding, with the exhibition and finds on display together with the trenches.
The enthusiasm of the local residents has been vast and this project has been a brilliant way to introduce archaeology and history to many people in an area whose history is often overlooked. Plans are in place for future interpretation of the site, and results will eventually be added to the online website.
