You Have a Degree?

Teach Logo

If you already have a degree there are two main routes for graduates to train as a teacher:-

  • College based Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
  • Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP)

The Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

The standard PGCE course runs for one year starting in September. There are now flexible, part time and distance learning options which vary in length according to your needs and circumstances. All courses require an 18 week school placement, taken in two full-time blocks.

Ideally, your degree should reflect the subject you're planning to specialise in.

Applications to most postgraduate courses are made through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry: you can apply on line at www.gttr.ac.uk, or call 01242 223 707.

Applications to some ITT providers can be submitted direct. Details can be obtained from the Teaching Information Line (0845 6000 991), or look on the Training & Development Agency website www.tda.gov.uk

Graduate Teaching Programme (GTP)

The GTP option is a work-based route into teaching.  On this full time course, you are employed in a school, with a salary, while you train.

The Training and Development Agency (TDA) will pay the school a grant to cover your salary as well as your training. Your training will consist of experience in school as well as input from an Initial Teacher Training provider.

The GTP is heavily over-subscribed and priority goes to high-quality trainees teaching specified shortage subjects and to applicants from under-represented groups, such as ethnic minority applicants or men training to teach primary age children.

Bracknell Forest schools work with Reading University, as the local Designated Recommending Body responsible for the training of the GTP candidate. They regularly run information meetings where prospective candidates can ask specific questions about the course. Contact Liz Smith the GTP Coordinator on 0118 378 8842 or email e.smith@reading.ac.uk

Before you apply to the University for a place, you must first find an appropriate school in Bracknell Forest to carry out your initial teacher training. We have 6 secondary schools, 29 primary schools and one special school, call the School Recruitment team for further details.
