You Don't Have a Degree?

If you currently do not have a degree you have several choices to enable you to gain Qualified Teacher Status in the UK.
Initial Teacher Training
There are several local universities where you can either study for a basic degree followed by a teaching training course or a combined BAEd course. Both routes lead to qualified teacher status and courses generally take 3-4 years.
Information on local teacher training providers can be found at www.tda.gov.uk.
If you have already studied at a Higher Education level (post 'A' level), your qualifications may count towards a degree, which will shorten the length of the course.
Alternative Route OU/External Degree
If it is not possible to undertake a full-time course of study there are alternative ways of preparing for a degree such as an external degree from a university or through study with Open University. Visit the Open University website www.open.ac.uk or contact them on 01908 274066 for further details.
Foundation Degree/Learning Support Assistant Route
There are undergraduate routes for prospective primary teachers with specially designed courses for teaching assistants currently working in schools. These undergraduate courses can lead to an Honours degree and provide Qualified Teacher Status (BA QTS).
The programme combines work-based study with day release. Teaching and learning will be organised to meet the particular need of people returning to study who are also engaged in regular work commitments. As well as the more traditional lecture, seminar and tutorial, students will make use of school-based tasks, distance learning materials, electronic communication and work-based peer group support..
St Mary's University College Twickenham and Oxford Brookes University Teacher Training College are the closest universities to Bracknell Forest to offer these courses.
Registered Teacher Programme
The much publicised Registered Teacher Programme is unfortunately unavailable in the Bracknell Forest area as no local initial teaching training providers support the scheme.
