Overseas Trained Teachers

Teach Logo

Over the past few years, there has been an increase in the number of teachers trained overseas looking for work in the UK.

As an Overseas Trained Teacher (OTT), you can work in the UK for up to 4 years without obtaining qualified teacher status (QTS) however, during that time, you are only able to work as a temporary teacher and will therefore be paid on the unqualified scale.

There is an agreement for the UK to recognise QTS awarded in an European Community country and therefore you may be eligible for QTS immediately under these arrangements.

For a non-European Community teacher to gain qualified teacher status, you must be assessed initially against the QTS standards. You may require further training, or QTS may be awarded immediately if all the standards are met.

Once approved with qualified teacher status, you can work, and be paid, as a qualified teacher in the UK, subject to work permit legislation.

For further information on how to gain QTS in the UK
