Behaviour Support Team
The Behaviour Support Team (BST) provides an integrated care pathway for children aged 4 to 11 with challenging behaviour.
Who can the Behaviour Support Team help?
The BST works with children, their families and schools to help ensure that all children are happy and secure. Where there are concerns about a child's behaviour or emotional well-being they can provide individual support for that child and family.
Here are some of the issues they may be able to help with:
- Children who cannot concentrate or settle in school
- Children who are disruptive at home
- Children who are not attending school or who have been excluded
- Children and families struggling with change, such as parental separation or divorce, or bereavement
- Children who are withdrawn
- Children experiencing bullying
- Children who are engaged in bullying behaviour
What can the BST do?
The BST works in a number of different ways, and following assessment, plan and deliver:
- Therapeutic sessions for children and families
- Parenting programmes
- Drop in sessions for parents and children
- Advice to schools and parents/carers on a wide range of issues
- Consultations on behaviour management
- Training and support for staff working in schools
Specific programmes for children will focus on:
- Developing self esteem
- Social skills
- Coping with transitions
- Enhancing access to learning
- Loss/separation anxiety
What happens next?
- The case is discussed by a multi-agency team of professionals
- If the case is accepted an assessment either at home and/or in school will be completed or the case will be signposted to an appropriate agency
- A programme of intervention/support will be planned and delivered in close consultation with parents/carers and other key players
How to contact the service
It is generally best to make contact through the child's school, however GPs and other agencies/professionals can also refer children to the team.
