Safer Cycling
Care is fundamental to the safety of all road users. Care for yourself and your bicycle is the best possible defence against the hazards which are ever present, and care for others prevents the annoyance and resentment which can often lead to dangerous actions. The Council provides a Cycle Training scheme to help children learn the fundamentals of safer cycling.
To help you be safe and be seen we are offering several items at special prices.

Reflective and Fluorescent Items

Adults: £1.70 Children’s: £1.20 - Mitre rucksack (with free mini football): £5.00
- Chain ‘Taggos’: £1.40
- Look out for other vehicles and pedestrians
- Look behind and signal clearly and in good time before making a manoeuvre
- Take care when leaving cycle routes to join the main traffic flow
- A bike is very mobile in traffic but sudden swerves and zig-zagging cannot be anticipated by motorists
- Be seen. Bright and reflective clothing helps both day and night in addition to cycle lights
- Always warn others of your presence by use of a bell, especially on shared routes
- Always wear a cycle helmet
- Plan your route to avoid heavy traffic if possible. Use cycle tracks and cycle routes when they are available
- Before you set off, make sure your cycle is in good working order
- Be aware that some bridges/paths are not cycle routes but links joining cycleways, therefore cyclists should dismount for their own safety and that of pedestrians
A general point - take extra care at junctions, especially where a cycle route meets a road.
