Natural England's Information

Natural England (NE), formally known as English Nature, is the agency responsible for conserving and enhancing biodiversity, landscapes and wildlife in rural, urban, coastal and marine areas. NE has produced a series of documents aimed at implementing the Habitats Directive while allowing housing delivery in the South East to proceed in a sustainable manner. Whilst the documents that NE produced have now been largely superceded, you may be interested in them for background information.

Supplementary Planning Document (Template)
There are three specific approaches to avoid and reduce the impacts on the SPA resulting from an increase in the local population of people from new development. Natural England is of the opinion that, if these three approaches are undertaken together, it will be possible to avoid the potential impacts of most development proposals on the SPA. These approaches include;

  • On site habitat management
  • On site access management
  • Planning restrictions and off site avoidance measures via the provision of Suitable Alternative Natural Green Spaces (SANGS)

The premise is the requirement for relevant developments to demonstrate that by making an appropriate contribution to the planned and timely provision of suitable alternative natural green space, the planning authority will be able to conclude that the development would not have any effect on the SPA.
