Composting

Composter

Well-made compost is invaluable for the build-up and maintenance of soil fertility and structure improving the soil’s ability to absorb and retain water. It also provides an ideal method of disposing of plant waste from the garden and kitchen.

You can either build your own custom made compost unit or purchase a ready-made unit. A variety of different sized compost units are available from garden centres or on the internet. Bracknell Forest Borough Council has arranged a special offer for its residents - a leaflet and order form can be downloaded on the right.

If you don’t have enough room in your garden for your own compost unit then you can make use of Bracknell Forest Borough Council’s garden waste collection service through the use of the brown paper garden waste sacks or the brown wheeled bin.

Alternatively you could get a wormery, which is a smaller, purpose-built, enclosed container into which kitchen and plant waste is regularly placed to be digested by worms. The worms convert the waste into high quality soil conditioner, usually with the added bonus of a liquid run-off which is ideal as a concentrated liquid feed for the garden or pot plants.
