Noise - When can't we help?

Unfortunately, the legislation this authority has a duty to uphold, currently does not include aircraft, road traffic or shouting in the street. Further information about these types of noise can be obtained by contacting the relevant authority.

Noise at work

Noise from road traffic

Certain types of noise may constitute an offence under road traffic law enforceable by the Police e.g. the sounding of a motor horn at certain times on restricted roads. Don't forget that Environmental Health may be able to help with vehicle alarms.

Noise from aircraft

General enquiries about aircraft noise, including helicopters, should be directed to:

Complaints about noise aircraft in this area should be made to:

  • Heathrow Airport: Freephone 0800 344844.
  • Elsewhere, complaints should be made directly to aircraft operators or aerodrome owners.

Noise from military aircraft

Complaints about noise from military aircraft should be made to any RAF station, RAF Regional Community Relations Office, or military flying unit when known. Alternatively, complaints may be made to:

Claims for loss, injury or damage resulting from military flying should be made to:

Compensation for noise from aerodromes

Enquiries should be made to the appropriate airport authority, or for military aerodromes:

Depreciation in property value: compensation

The Department of the Environment Transport and the Regions issues a series of free booklets that explain the circumstances in which compensation may be payable when the value of a property depreciates by more than £50 as a result of noise (and other physical factors) arising from the construction or use of certain public works.

Road construction noise and traffic noise: insulation
