Noise and Dust from Construction/Demolition Sites

Health and safety on construction sites is enforced by the Health and Safety Executive in Basingstoke. However, when noise and other nuisance issues extend beyond the boundaries other legislation steps in.

The Control of Pollution Act 1974 enables the local authority to instruct the company’s involved to carry out noisy works within set reasonable hours and may dictate the type of plant and machinery to be used in order to reduce noise levels.

Underlying this and the Environmental Protection Act 1990 is ‘best practicable means’.

Where dust is an issue, suppression using water is often the best course of action. Sheeting of loads from the site is also best practice.
